Product details
Fighting centaurs, courting tritons, and elegiac panes: eccentric hybrids of human and animal are among the most distinctive and popular motifs in the work of the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901). Kerstin Borchhardt systematically examines his representations of hybrids for the first time. She categorizes the works in terms of their motifs and places them in the context of contemporary discourses surrounding the reception of ancient myths, societal stereotypes, and the emergence of the theory of evolution. In doing so, she not only sheds new light on Böcklin's works but also highlights the significance of his creatures for the development of hybrid beings in Western art up to the modern era.
