Product details

The Salon de la Section d'Or (Salon of the Golden Section), which took place in Paris in 1912, is considered one of the highlights in the history of French Cubism. Lisa Werner demonstrates how artists, including Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, and Francis Picabia, as well as lesser-known figures, sought to position themselves within the avant-garde of the pre-war years through a specially curated exhibition. At the beginning of the autumn season in 1912, 31 artists presented more than 186 works in the Parisian gallery La Boëtie under the banner of the Golden Section. The exhibition was programmatically supported by Guillaume Apollinaire, Maurice Raynal, and Pierre Reverdy through lectures, articles, and book volumes. The author analyzes the means employed by the initiators to present themselves. She provides rich materials from the period and succeeds in partially reconstructing the exhibition. In doing so, she is able to correct the prevailing image of the Section d'Or in the historiography of modern art.
