The portrait is one of the oldest forms of creative expression by humans. Its traces extend far before the high cultures, long before their written language, and well before the history of representationally competent images. From the abundance of available material, the authors have selected exemplary texts for the source anthology written for study purposes, which are presented in both the original and translation, accompanied by a detailed commentary that explains and contextualizes them.
