The artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) became one of the most famous women in the history of science due to her insights into insect metamorphosis. Her books on butterflies and caterpillars went through numerous editions. She even traveled to Suriname with one of her daughters to study tropical butterflies. Merian conveys her findings on the coexistence of insects, beneficial organisms, and parasites in her own unique painting style. She also developed a new way to depict butterfly flight: like in a film sequence, the insect is shown in different stages of movement. She trained both of her daughters to be painters, for which she created specific worksheets. The attribution questions that arise from her work can be convincingly clarified by Carin Grabowski. The book is richly illustrated.
