Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle has primarily been discussed in relation to gender and body themes. The analysis of the filmic narrative now brings new facets to the forefront: the narrative and iconographic functions of the landscape, aspects of the sculptural, and the staging of the work are examined comprehensively for the first time. Matthew Barney is considered one of the star artists of the 1990s, achieving worldwide recognition with his multimedia work The Cremaster Cycle in 2002. In a total of five films with over six hours of runtime, along with numerous sculptures, photographs, and drawings, Barney created a fairy-tale-like visual world that has been showcased in some of the most prestigious museums in the world, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Musée d'art Moderne in Paris.
