Product details
Irene Schubiger systematically addresses the topic of self-presentation in video for the first time in this book. Using works from the 1970s and 80s, the author develops a methodological toolkit for engaging with this new genre. Since the emergence of the video medium in the mid-1960s, the theme of self-presentation in video art has occupied a significant space. Many themes and techniques of video self-presentation stem from the tradition of self-portraiture. However, the crucial change in the representation of face and body in video lies in the apparatus characteristics of the medium: artists perform in front of the camera as a form of self-presentation, controlling themselves through instant feedback and continuously reacting to the recordings. Connected to the apparatus circuit, they navigate between object and subject functions. Post-production, known as editing, allows for the artistic realization of temporal processes that are fundamentally important for self-presentation. In the context of the history and theory of video art, Irene Schubiger highlights a transformation process in artistic self-presentation that began in the early 1970s with the new medium, which already anticipates developments of the 1990s. Particularly given the still rudimentary and challenging conditions for archiving and viewing video art, Schubiger's material handling represents a significant achievement.
