Product details

For modern art viewers, the visibility and accessibility of images is something taken for granted. This was not always the case. Particularly in the Middle Ages, image concepts and practices were often designed so that images were not permanently visible. For example, the wings of altarpieces were only opened on certain occasions. Medieval image presentations deliberately incorporated the tension between presence and withdrawal of sight, as well as light and darkness. The authors create an art historical panorama in the book—from pendants and garments to reliquaries and panel paintings, and from mosaics to wall paintings—interpreting concepts of a specifically medieval visibility of images.
