Since the 1970s, tattooing has increasingly played a significant role as an artistic medium. A prominent example in contemporary art is Damien Hirst's work "Butterfly, Divided" - a butterfly tattoo placed on a vulva. Building on this central example, Ole Wittmann examines the significance of tattoos as independent works of art in his book. He explains the relationships between tattoos and human skin as a medium, thereby highlighting the specific materiality of the tattooed image. He also explores the peculiarities of the butterfly motif, which has enjoyed great popularity since the 19th century and can be closely related to the location of its placement.
