Product details
Bloody dew drips from the trees, the dead rise from their graves: The fifteen signs are a series of unusual events that point to the end times and thus to the Last Judgment. Little known today, they were widely represented in text and image during the late Middle Ages. The author examines the visual representations of the signs found in wall, glass, and panel paintings, as well as illustrations in manuscripts and early prints. She questions how and why this new image motif became so popular in the 14th century and then faded into obscurity after just 200 years. This first comprehensive study of the motif of the signs, its function, and its significance offers new insights into the mentality and piety of the late Middle Ages.
