In Namibia, the former German colony of South West Africa, there are still people who identify as German. Who belongs to this group? How do they perceive themselves and their African surroundings? The author describes the strategies that German Namibians use to affirm their cultural independence and uniqueness in relation to other Namibian population groups. The phenomenon of ethnicity is examined as a daily practice on four levels: as social action in everyday life, as discursive practice and justification rhetoric, as institutional and private security, and through so-called borderline cases.
