The sole entry of username and password during login is no longer secure today. Almost all leading online platforms therefore offer the option to log in with an additional component. This so-called two-factor authentication (2FA) significantly protects your user account from misuse and identity theft, even if your username and password fall into the wrong hands.

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) explicitly recommends the use of two-factor authentication. The most commonly used method is the time-based one-time password method, known as TOTP. Often, authenticator apps on smartphones are used for this purpose. However, due to the limited security of smartphones, TOTP can be easily intercepted. Hardware-based TOTP generators provide high security.
