Product details

This book is the result of ethnographic work in Nampologoma, a rural village in Eastern Uganda. It analyzes the social, cultural, and moral changes brought about by the development of rice cultivation in the region during the 1980s. It provides a profound understanding of the nuances associated with the transformation of a rural subsistence economy into a market economy. Its anthropological approach goes beyond the usual perspective of food in terms of supply and demand or in relation to rights and claims. Instead, it focuses on the significance of the socio-cultural context in which food is produced and consumed. The increased reliance on money has not necessarily led to individualization and the circumvention of social connections. However, the growing availability and dependence on money have resulted in new types of social relationships, such as loans or the hiring of labor. It avoids the danger of moral judgment while presenting a balanced view of the benefits and losses experienced by various social actors and how changes are morally framed and perceived. The book raises important political questions related to plans for decentralization, agricultural modernization, and poverty alleviation.
