In the summer of 2012, the Rojava revolution begins. A part of the Kurdish population in northern Syria, amidst the bloody civil war, implements long-held goals of women's liberation, democracy, and pluralism. Shortly thereafter, the self-governing region is attacked by the Islamic State (IS), which incites global outrage with its heinous crimes. The breaking of the siege of the city of Kobanê becomes a symbol and a turning point in the war against the IS. In long and costly battles, Kurdish units liberate village after village, and when they succeed in 2019 in taking the last piece of land from the IS in Syria, a sigh of relief spreads across the world. Around this time, two filmmakers from the UK invite scholar and artist Janet Biehl to accompany them to Rojava. Janet Biehl, a close collaborator of Murray Bookchin, conducts interviews with people on the street during her journey, explores how the democratic revolution is progressing in society, and examines the impact of the war on them. She learns that, even amidst the war, social solidarity in this society with a pluralistic and emancipatory claim has only strengthened. Janet Biehl's comic report allows us to partake in conversations with the residents of Rojava, narrates the suffering and solidarity in the war against the IS in northeastern Syria, and portrays a relatable image of life in a democratic awakening with a simple yet touching style.
