Harry Martinson (1904-1978) set out to sea as a sailor at the age of 16 and spent seven years traveling the oceans. Upon returning to Sweden, he published two volumes of poetry and ultimately, through literary processing, his experiences at sea: "Journeys Without Destination" and "Cape Farewell!" Both volumes are compiled in this book. They consist of seemingly hastily thrown-together sketches, travel essays, and short stories that playfully blur the line between biography and fiction. Enthusiasm and a spirit of discovery characterize the texts, which celebrate the journey, the foreignness to be explored, and the act of being on the move, without social boundaries and without regard for societal conventions. Whether Trondheim, Rio de Janeiro, Ghent, Reykjavík, Montevideo, Santa Fé, the English Channel, or the Panama Canal - whether woven-in poems, ethnographic, scenic, dialogical, or classical.
