New Orleans, Louisiana, in the year 1862. Amid the turmoil of the Civil War, the young Isabeau Murrait, known to everyone as "Zabo," sets out to reunite with her younger brother Nano. When the unlikely pair arrives at the estate of Lananette, Zabo meets her great-grandmother Isabeau de Marnaye for the first time, who shares with her an extraordinary story about wars, prisons, and the horrors of slavery. Despite being separated by 80 years, the two women share at least one thing in common: their love for freedom and independence!
