The scientifically grounded collection, preservation, and documentation of objects from East German history holds great potential for city and regional history museums, which has, however, rarely been utilized so far. At the same time, the increasing number of privately operated, commercial East German museums indicates a public interest in the topic. Against this backdrop, the City History Museum of Leipzig, in collaboration with the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, held a scientific conference in June 2010 that brought together museum practitioners, contemporary historians, art scholars, and representatives from the field of political education. Questions regarding the museum presentation and communication of contemporary history, the handling of East German art in exhibitions, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced by municipal museums were discussed. This volume documents the lectures and discussions.
