Product details
This book examines individual conceptions of God among Christian believers. Based on empirical data collected in a qualitative interview study, individual images of God are reconstructed and systematically categorized within a typology according to their effects and strengths. Until now, sociological theories of religion have defined religion as a system of beliefs, rituals, and values that relates to a God, a higher power, or a supernatural entity. However, what exactly is understood by this central category of faith, or how believers themselves define this intimate reference point of their faith, has not yet been part of the debate. The image of God, as a new theoretical construct, is therefore introduced into the sociological theory debate on religion in this book. It is theoretically situated within religion, its individual emergence is outlined, and it is typologized.
