The Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany guarantees in Article 7, Paragraph 3, all religious communities the subjective right to provide religious education in public schools for those students who belong to their faith. In addition to the major Christian denominations, a growing number of smaller religious communities in various federal states are now exercising this right. While the religious education of the two major German churches and the Muslim religious education that has been introduced in some federal states have already been the subject of numerous discussions in legal literature in Germany, little has been published regarding the religious education provided by other smaller religious communities. This study aims to address this gap by presenting the current situation regarding religious education for smaller religious communities in public schools in Germany and by legally evaluating the agreements made between the ministries of education and the religious communities for this purpose.
