Product details

What do we understand today by landscape? Still the aesthetic ideal inherited from Romanticism of a variedly designed natural, agricultural, and settlement space? Modern landscapes are often "non-places." They bear traces of economic interventions, changing borders, and are shaped by displacement, war, or urban sprawl and mining. Often, only a kind of residual nature remains, where a few ruins testify to historical events. Desolate landscapes that speak of past violence have been reduced to mere teaching material. At the same time, memories of war are visibly embodied in architectural monuments from the 20th century.

24 artists and artist groups bring the topic of landscape to life in this exhibition and in numerous contributions to the extensive book. They work on landscape images that lie between fiction, symbolism, and documentation, appealing to our ability to read and decipher these images – and of course, they address our imagination and our capacity for empathy.
