Ren Hang is anything but a rebel. Of modest stature, naturally shy, and prone to depression, the 28-year-old photographer from Beijing stands at the forefront of the struggle for creative freedom among Chinese artists. Like his advocate Ai Weiwei, Ren produces works that are considered dangerous to society and the communist state. However, Ren states: "The political ideas expressed in my images have nothing to do with China. It is Chinese politics that wants to intrude into my art. One of my exhibitions has already been canceled by the Chinese government due to suspicions of indecency. Why this accusation? Because of his models: His friends and increasingly his fans are photographed nude, often outdoors, on treetops or at the edges of dizzying rooftops in Beijing, which are stacked like concrete cubes.
