I received the diagnosis of dementia seven years before my husband's death. I was unfamiliar with the disease, neither the initial symptoms, the progression, nor the end. I made many mistakes; I couldn't understand his actions. He was no longer my husband; he was no longer the loving partner, the friend, and the caring companion. The shared planning and discussing of our lives was no longer possible.
