How does one leave life as painlessly as possible? This is the contemplation that begins the deeply personal novel by Mojgan Ataollahi. The 34-year-old narrator, a film editor, has married Majid against her family's wishes and moved with him to Behshahr by the Caspian Sea. After years of physical and emotional abuse, she ultimately decides to separate and flees with her daughter Matissa to her parents in Tehran. However, the divorce from Majid proves to be more complicated than expected due to the misogynistic justice system. Exhausted by years of court battles and disillusioned by further failed romantic relationships, the protagonist takes up residence in a dilapidated house by the Caspian Sea under the pretense of wanting to continue her film studies. In reality, she plans her suicide, which ultimately fails due to partly grotesque circumstances.
