Nelson Mandela, son of a black tribal leader and a great fighter against racial segregation in South Africa. Christo Brand, a white farmer's son, born into the culture of the apartheid regime. These two individuals, with such unequal backgrounds, met each other in prison on Robben Island: Mandela as a life-sentenced freedom fighter, Brand as his state-appointed guard, who had to censor the inmate's personal correspondence among other duties. The 60-year-old political prisoner and the just 19-year-old guard could have become bitter enemies. However, over the course of a decade they spent together in prison, an extraordinary friendship developed between them. Their bond deepened through many acts of humanity and remained intact even after Mandela's release. Christo Brand recounts this in his memoirs.
