Product details

The author addresses professionals in all helping and counseling professions as well as students (psychology, psychotherapy, medicine, social work, social pedagogy, psychosocial counseling, pastoral care, supervision, coaching) and draws attention to a central category for the quality of helping actions: the relational dynamics between the parties involved. He first presents the significance of a dialogical attitude for helping actions and its characteristics, and then develops the cultural, historical, religious, and philosophical resources of this attitude to support a culture of reflection in helping professions. These resources are made accessible to practitioners for the first time here. A nuanced engagement with resources and model types facilitates the recognition of their significance for practice while also allowing for the acknowledgment and reflection on their possible ambivalences (helper kitsch, boundary violations, abuse of power). For example, an appropriately balanced approach between the polarities of the Christian concept of "love thy neighbor" (Agape) and the Greek concept of love as "desire" (Eros) is a significant prerequisite for the quality and success of helping actions, as well as for the helper's ability to endure the often demanding challenges and contradictions of professional everyday life. "The author addresses the topic of helping professions from an interdisciplinary perspective, which is not only a new approach but also leads to highly differentiated, previously unconsidered research findings." (Prof. Dr. Dr. Werner Wiater, University of Augsburg) "A significant expansion of knowledge, both in professional and practical terms." (Prof. Dr. Nando Belardi, Technical University of Chemnitz) "The presentation has a quality that is also accessible to students and interested laypersons." (Prof. Dr. Bernhard Koring, Technical University of Chemnitz).
