Anthea Hamilton's interdisciplinary approach to performance is evident in her sculptural assemblages and installations, which she refers to as "performative spaces" and which evoke the appearance of stage sets or film sets due to their orientation towards a display side. Her sculptures, idiosyncratic forms on the brink of creation and collapse, serve as props for stories that have yet to be told. She frequently cites the French author Antonin Artaud as an important source of inspiration, particularly his idea of a "physical understanding of images." It is precisely this bodily experience that she aims to evoke when encountering her artworks, which consist of unexpected and unorthodox materials, surprising proportions, and are ultimately underpinned by a subtle humor. The artist's book she conceived includes a series of collages made from personal photos, found imagery, and computer drawings, as well as a short conversation with her daughter.
