Rheinlandschaften was the first book published in 1975 by the newly founded Schirmer/Mosel Verlag. At that time, 40 years ago, photography was still considered the stepchild of art sciences, and only insiders would have been familiar with the name August Sander. Both of these perceptions have changed significantly since then. After 13 monographic publications from our house alone—among them three editions of his monumental portrait work People of the 20th Century—August Sander (1876-1964) is now recognized as one of the internationally acclaimed figures in the history of photography. The photographs of the Rheinland landscapes were taken between 1929 and 1946. After Sander's first publication, Face of Our Time, was confiscated by the Nazis, he turned to politically safer landscape photography, creating images of unusual atmospheric charm and high technical quality.
