Sanchez (born September 9, 1953) is a retired general of the United States Army who served as the commander of the V Corps of Coalition Forces in Iraq from June 2003 to June 2004. He was the highest-ranking Hispanic in the United States Army when he retired on November 1, 2006. At the time of his retirement, Lieutenant General Sanchez described his career as a casualty of the Abu Ghraib scandal. Sanchez was born into a poor Mexican-American family in Rio Grande City, Texas. During the Vietnam War (1969-1973), Sanchez was in college. He spent a year at the University of Texas at Austin on an ROTC scholarship and eventually transferred to Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas, where he graduated in 1973 with a double degree in mathematics and history.
