Traditional therapies such as rotation machines, hanging, clitoridectomy, inflicting burns, as well as cold and heat torture were followed in the 20th century by scientific treatment methods - initially, in the late 1920s and 1930s, various forms of shock therapy, and then the still-used surgical destruction of the brain through lobotomy. Starting in the 1950s, treatment with psychotropic drugs began. However, the use of so-called neuroleptics has often resulted in severe damage, even death, for patients. Meanwhile, research into mind control continues; for decades, techniques have been tested that allow access to human behavior.
