The Horizontal Effect of Directives and EU Fundamental Rights: Systematization and Guidelines for Legal Application. The European Court of Justice affirms the direct applicability of Union fundamental rights in relations between private parties but denies the horizontal effect of directives. Against the backdrop of complex case law, this work examines the differentiated effects of directives and Union fundamental rights among private individuals, the controversial interplay between primary and secondary sources of law, and the rights of the involved private parties. The aim of this work is to systematize the case law in light of the peculiarities of the EU's supranational multi-level system and to derive guidelines for legal application from it. The study highlights the potential, limitations, and possible practical consequences of the case law, particularly in the areas of anti-discrimination, working time regulation, maternity protection, and whistleblowing. The work has been awarded the Jean Monnet Prize for European Law 2024 and the Ars Iuris Dissertation Prize 2024.
