Product details

"Moses the Egyptian" is a text by Hans Blumenberg in which he engages with two influential figures in the intellectual history of the 20th century: Sigmund Freud and Hannah Arendt. Written in the late 1980s and preserved in the folder "Unauthorized Fragments," it is one of the most striking pieces from the philosopher's estate. Blumenberg begins with Freud's late work published in 1939, "The Man Moses and Monotheistic Religion," which he describes as Freud's "great and final insult to humanity in the form of its most suffering." He then moves on to a critique of Arendt and her book "Eichmann in Jerusalem," which is marked by an unparalleled sharpness. Blumenberg sees a rigorism at work in both Freud and Arendt that presents itself in the name of truth but turns into ruthlessness, blinding them to the political.
