Product details

Rilke's translations of Michelangelo have hardly been studied so far, neither in Rilke research nor in Michelangelo research. To this day, Michelangelo's brilliant artistic monuments overshadow his "Rime"; only recently has a gradual awareness developed for the poetic value of poetic translations. The interdisciplinary study is divided into two main chapters. The author first examines Rilke's aesthetic engagement with Michelangelo's artistic work. She shows how this leads to the creation of a unique image of Michelangelo in Rilke's work, within the context of the ideologically charged Michelangelo discourse of the turn of the century. Subsequently, Rilke's translational reception of Michelangelo's poetry is systematically analyzed for the first time. Initially, the disparate corpus of 118 translations (created between 1912 and 1921) that existed during Rilke's lifetime is considered.
