Product details

Maria Lassnig is considered one of the most significant artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her first own studio was in Klagenfurt, where her global career began. From this studio, an improvised post-war salon of great radiance, this book explores aspects of the artist's art and life: a tribute to Maria Lassnig from the land of her origin, which she rarely called home. Landscape is the key that divides the book into three sections. In the first section, 'Landscape of the Necessary: Place – Time – Image – Word,' Lassnig's first studio is presented as a place of beginnings and placed in its time. Following this, a theoretical text on images enters the landscape, as does Maria Lassnig's literature: the word. In the section 'Landscape Master Class,' students from the Lassnig Master Class, now established figures in the art world, share their voices. Being a master student is a lifelong commitment. The third and final section, 'Going Near and Far,' focuses on encounters in collaboration with Maria Lassnig – the film camera makes an appearance. This is followed by the text miniatures 'Moments of Closeness.' Friendships and other aversions are discussed: some that go far away, but also those in the neighboring houses of the studio. She fought for her art, to which she devoted everything. The authors of the book – including the editor – consist of scholars from the University of Klagenfurt, artists from Maria Lassnig's master class, as well as people who were variously close to this artist and her work.
