For Max Bühlmann, the picture surface is always a picture space; painting is visual thinking in spaces. He constructs color spaces that range from subtle to mannered color quality. An unexpected tilting of lines, a surprising encounter of color values, and a lively brushstroke are characteristics that resist classification into familiar abstract-concrete categories. He engages in painting parallel to his sculptural works, often finding inspiration for images in his plastic works and vice versa. After his sculptural oeuvre has already been documented in several volumes, this is the first overview of his decades-long painting work.
