The pension claims of mayors and other municipal elected officials who have left office are frequently the subject of critical reporting. Officials at the head of cities, municipalities, and districts must be adequately provided for according to current constitutional law. To fulfill their duties in line with the demands of their office, they require both internal and material independence, which must extend beyond their active term. At the same time, the public demands transparent rules regarding the compensation of leaders in their city and district halls. Martin Ritter has presented the status, salary, and pension law of municipal elected officials in Lower Saxony in a comprehensive overview and has revised it following the reform of the regulations on the extension of the term of the chief administrative officer that came into effect in February 2025. This work thus serves as a guide in a complex subject matter that is likely only fully understood by a few experts, for the interested public, for current officeholders, and for candidates seeking a position as a municipal elected official.
