No one really likes to sit in the dentist's chair. When a hefty bill looms or the treatment hasn't gone well, patients are often both frustrated and bewildered. Implant or bridge, inlay or filling, partial crown or crown - hardly anyone can assess what treatment is truly necessary and what it should cost. The out-of-pocket expenses for patients are rising, and the complicated cost system provides wonderful revenue streams for dentists. From bleaching to braces, many extras are sold. The commercialization of dentistry is well advanced. Bad apples issue outrageous bills and are rarely monitored. In contrast, patients must painstakingly reclaim their share through civil law and bear follow-up costs themselves.
