The Syrian-born critic of Islam, Laila Mirzo, presents a provocative thesis in this polemic: Even if there is no liberal Islam, there are certainly liberal Muslims. An orthodox practice of Islam collides in many ways with our understanding of equality and self-determination. The oppression of women in Muslim communities, the religiously motivated persecution of homosexuals, and the glorification of violence against non-believers pose significant problems even in the heart of Europe, which are further exacerbated by the increased immigration from Muslim countries.
