Katja Schneidt has been volunteering in refugee assistance for nearly 20 years. She supports people in taking their first steps in Germany, accompanies them to official appointments, teaches German courses, serves as a point of contact for concerns and troubles, and takes care of situations where children are not sent to school or women do not want to go to the doctor without accompaniment. She is there for the people who come to Germany in large numbers. And she draws a sobering conclusion by stating, "No, Mrs. Merkel, we cannot do this!" Throughout her work, Katja Schneidt has realized how overwhelmed politics, administration, and authorities truly are. She has seen how defenseless the German state is against those who confuse hospitality with a self-service shop, how great the misunderstanding of many refugees towards our culture is, and how inadequate a multitude of volunteers can be.
