It includes all villages and towns in Thuringia as well as the localities of the districts of Sangerhausen, Burgenlandkreis, and Weissenfels. This substantial work now comprises 1120 pages and presents 210 very old illustrations of numerous localities in Thuringia in this new edition. Author Wolfgang Kahl has created a reference work that documents the written sources of Thuringian history. The author states: "Expressis verbis, as a Latin scholar would say, for they are undoubtedly the oldest written sources regarding the history of Thuringia, which are mentioned in the following alphabetical list of places concerning the chronological or documentary first mention of Thuringian towns and villages based on biographies, annals, chronicles, property records, or land registers, particularly of the monasteries, documents, and excerpts from documents. As requested, I have complied with the suggestions to include the places of the districts of Sangerhausen, Burgenlandkreis, and Weissenfels, as they were considered part of Thuringia in various centuries, especially during the Middle Ages. What began 20 years ago has now evolved into a small Thuringian regional and local history in data, with many views of villages and towns, so that due to numerous corrections and additions, the handbook has gained a bit more in both completeness of places and reliability of the references.".
