Kat believes that men are nothing but trouble, and dogs are a much better choice. It's no surprise that her dog grooming salon in Seattle is thriving. However, when her two best friends move to Independence, Colorado, one after the other, she decides to follow suit. She looks forward to settling into small-town life and exploring the area with her Bordeaux mastiff, Rocky. The only disruption to her plans is the arrogant hockey player Sam, who drives her to the brink of frustration. It doesn't help that he looks like a Nordic god. But then she finds the first injured dog. Shortly after, she discovers a second one. The usually bustling rumor mill falls silent, and Kat has a terrible suspicion: illegal dog fighting. When no one believes her, she quickly secures Sam's willing support and begins to investigate on her own.
