In the 12th and early 13th centuries, Alsace became a core region of the Staufer dynasty after Frederick I of Staufen, the Duke of Swabia, had to cede his sovereign rights on the right bank of the Upper Rhine to the Dukes of Zähringen as a result of the Investiture Controversy in 1098. Through the construction of castles, the promotion of monasteries to develop the land, and the founding of towns, the Staufer sought to increase their influence in Alsace. During this time, numerous new monastic complexes and churches in the Romanesque style were built, featuring various types of portals, whose door lintels and tympana often served as the sole carriers of imagery. The sculpted representations on the preserved arch fields display stylistic variations ranging from incised motifs to free-standing reliefs. Their iconography includes ornaments, Christian symbols, and multi-figure compositions, some of which are complemented by inscriptions. In some objects, regional prototypes and workshop connections with portal sculptures from neighboring areas can be identified, while in a few, even the political power relations are expressed.
