Vienna around 1910: Marie works as a nanny for a respected family in the fashionable cottage district. One day, she is sent to the nearby bookstore to pick up a book. However, she returns empty-handed. The volume has not yet arrived, and bookseller Oskar will bring it personally as soon as possible. When Oskar rings the bell at the house on Sternwartestrasse in the afternoon, he has two books with him: one for the master of the house and the other for Marie, along with a personal note addressed to the young lady.
