Hema and Kaushik meet in Massachusetts. Their parents, who are from Bengal, are friends. However, while Hema has a crush on Kaushik, he is aloof and withdrawn. Almost twenty years later, they unexpectedly encounter each other in Rome: Kaushik is a renowned war photographer, and Hema is fleeing into a marriage of convenience. Both are homeless, worldly, and yet driven. A sudden, wild love may seize them, perhaps too late.
