Franz, a young man from the provinces, travels to the capital and becomes a salesman in his uncle Dreyer's department store. Soon, a relationship begins to develop with Dreyer's wife, Martha. In order to dream of a shared future, Franz and Martha devise a plan to murder Dreyer in the most perfect way possible. The ironic exploration of the characters reveals Vladimir Nabokov as an early master of delicate psychology.
