The absent-minded professor Timofey Pnin is a lonely individualist deeply disturbed by the American Way of Life. The immigrant appears to his surroundings as a comical failure. However, his dignity, seriousness, and personality make that very environment seem ridiculous: it fails in the face of him. Everything that happens to Pnin endears this old-fashioned Russian scholar to us.
