Product details

Between 1919 and 1934, the social democratic city government of Vienna produced a proletarian culture that was unique throughout Europe. This endeavor, which represents the realization of a socio-political utopia, has left both visible and invisible traces in the city. Art historian Inge Podbrecky follows these traces with her city guide "Red Vienna" on five routes. Her CITYwalks lead to the municipal housing projects in Margareten and along the Gürtel; to the classic Viennese working-class district of Favoriten; to the former single-kitchen house Heimhof on the Schmelz; to the most monumental landmark of Red Vienna, the Karl-Marx-Hof; and to the 13th district, to the Werkbundsiedlung, a prime example of architectural modernity in Austria. The guide features a competent selection and arrangement of objects, architectural and cultural historical background information, and clear route sketches.
