The Maximiliansweg is, after a brief introduction in Austria, the major Bavarian alpine long-distance hiking trail. Inspired by the historic travel route of King Maximilian II from 1858, it leads from Lake Constance to Lake Königssee, traversing the Bavarian Pre-Alps from Allgäu to Berchtesgaden. Famous castles like Neuschwanstein are along the route, and well-known peaks such as Benediktenwand, Herzogstand, and Hochfelln offer panoramic views of the Alpine foothills. Visits to traditional valley towns with vibrant customs complement the mountain hikes. The Maximiliansweg is also suitable as a long-distance trail for alpine beginners: the elevation gain is manageable for reasonably fit mountain enthusiasts, the paths are well-marked, rarely exposed, and usually accessible from the end of May. The hut infrastructure is also good, and the individual stages can be reached by public transport.
