West Berlin 1968: Political protests, especially by students against the Vietnam War and the prevailing social conditions, reach their peak. Mass demonstrations erupt on the streets, and at the Free University, there are strikes, sit-ins, and violent confrontations. Psychology student and research assistant Peter Kappe sympathizes with the leftist student movement and Kommune I, led by Fritz Teufel and Rainer Langhans. During demonstrations, Peter frequently encounters the popular actor and singer Kurt Kannenhenkel. One day, when Kannenhenkel comes under suspicion of having suffocated the prostitute Monika Mönningsee in her apartment, the press launches a veritable witch hunt against the leftist intellectual artist. However, Kannenhenkel vehemently denies the crime. Convinced of his comrade's innocence, Peter begins.
