Last spring, the Spanish government published a map for the first time that marks more than 2,000 mass graves from the Civil War and the subsequent Franco dictatorship. The extent of Francoist terror during and after the Civil War has only recently become fully known. This has also given new momentum to the debate surrounding the facts of the past, collective memory, and the public reckoning with the dictatorship in Spain. Georg Pichler has spoken with descendants from both sides, the Republicans and the Francoists, as well as with scholars, intellectuals, journalists, judges, and politicians, to provide a comprehensive representation of 'memory politics' across Spain. Additionally, he traces the various phases of Spain's reckoning with its past from the end of the Civil War to the present and compares the Spanish debates with those in other European and Latin American countries. Last but not least, the book is also an analysis of the current political conditions in Spain, where the ideological and political conflicts from that time continue, and there is still intense debate over the interpretation of the past.
