Product details

Hello - Bonjour! Excursions and encounters at the language border between the Romandy and German-speaking Switzerland. The border between German-speaking and Western Switzerland - the Röstigraben - is also a cultural boundary and the "bone of contention" in all discussions about Swiss identity. We aim to explore on foot whether the much-discussed and criticized divide truly exists and how the people here live. Along the language border path from the Jura to the Matterhorn, we can expect not only interesting encounters on both sides of the Röstigraben but also lesser-known landscapes. The route crosses Switzerland, through the Jura, the central plateau, the pre-Alps, and over the Alps, from Neumühle in the Lützelatal to the foot of the Matterhorn. Along the way, we will encounter larger and smaller villages and towns like Biel/Bienne or Fribourg/Freiburg, as well as remote countryside. The route is divided into 22 daily stages. The hiking guide will continually point out both foreground and background details, stories and historical facts, such as the Jura village that was a free republic for four years, or the Fribourg holiday home settlement that literally went downhill one day. Of course, detailed information on paths, accommodations, and restaurants is also included.
