Kurt Tucholsky is at the beginning of his career as a writer; he publishes in the feuilleton of the social democratic "Vorwärts." The student makes connections with Brod and Kafka in Prague and with the "Simplicissimus" editor Hans Erich Blaich (Dr. Owlglass). The success of his debut "Rheinsberg" inspires him, as does the trust that Siegfried Jacobsohn, the publisher of the "Schaubühne," places in his new employee. Together with Kurt Szafranski, the illustrator of "Rheinsberg," he attempts an ambitious bibliophilic project: "Orion. A Year in Letters." The resulting correspondence with renowned authors and visual artists is documented here for the first time in detail. From August 1914, the "writing soldier" reports on his reading, the design of the field newspaper "Der Flieger," life on the Eastern Front, and finally, after the war ends.
